The Memories Expo
Karen and I took the day off and went to the Memories Expo at the Orange County Convention Center. There were about the same number of vendors as in prior years, except larger booths and more isle space. Since it was Thursday it really wasn't that crowded. Classes we took Embellishing Outside the Box
I signed up for the "embellishing outside the box" class. This was hosted by the 'Sweetwater Sisters". They basically had a class for decorating an accordion book. I didn't stay for the entire class, but as you can see from the website, they're style is to basically slap as much stuff as you can on the outside and inside of a book. Some of their books were great. These books make great added features to 12x12 pages if you want to fit more photos. They're collage style is also great for decorating tags. Check out their website for project ideas. Acquisitions: Accordion book kit with some papers and fiber was given with class.
Absolute Organization
Karen took this class that described a system using the scrap rack. I've seen it in many of the scrapbook magazines. It basically stores all your paper and embellishments in a modular binder system. You can store up to 7 sections and interchange them as you work. You can also remove the sections and tote them to your next crop. Here is the website that sponsored the class:
BEST BOOTHS-NEW TRICKS The best booth in my opinion goes to DiBono Studio
The artist was present at the show demonstrating here incredible heritage embellishments. She uses vintage papers and mylar photos and creates the most stunning, detailed tags and framed collages. Scroll down her gallery website and be amazed. The online photos are nothing compared to the finished project. I especially admire her use of metal and wire-- I'm one that doesn't mix metals, but she did this really well. Next year I will take her class--and this time stay the entire time. Acquisitions: vintage papers, and tags.
Most inventive product for me was the Noxon hammerless eyelit setter.
If you're like me and dread adding those necessary eyelits, then listen up. This tool is terrific-go to the website and buy one. For $32 you never have to worry about splitting eyelits again. Incidentally, if you're into wood-working this guy has all of the cool tools.
Most Useful booth for me was Tessler Stamp Co.
The owner has got the metal embossing thing down. She had metal embossing tools tipped with a plastic that won't mar the metal. She had the most beautifully etched metal samples and demonstrated the technique so that anyone can take it home and be a metal artist. Unfortunately her web site isn't the most robust, but I'm sure a phone call will point you in the right direction. On her website she does have an educational page for embossing metal. Most versatile technique for me was the stick on accessory tape.
Several booths had this but I purchased a kit at Kreiniks. The tape is so sticky that you can fill it with embellishments like fiber and then add a layer of tiny glass beads. This makes the embellishment look glazed. Place the sticky tape over a photo, then add the glass beads over the top and you're done. No messy glues or embossing powders. Acquisition: Kit for $28 included various tape sizes, fibers and beads.
