Urban Flats
Winter Park
On Friday night, while looking for a quick place to eat, Mark and I stumbled across Urban Flats. The building is eye catching and sits adjacent to Ole Ole in Winter Park. Since we were in the area without a reservation, we took the opportunity to try this hip looking place.
The restaurant is on the outer edge of Rollins College and is obviously frequented by students. The décor is very hip and urban as suggested by the name. They even had a Belgian wheat beer which I tried, Mark had an Australian Shiraz from Ironberry. Both were quite tasty. $6.00 for a 6oz glass of wine.
For starters we had the Urban Salad. It was little more than a bag of field greens with a tiny sprinkle of goat cheese and golden raisins-nothing very unique or urban here, a very uninspired salad. The salad was enough for two and Mark and I split one. 5.95
We each had a flat bread for an entree—aka a pizza by us food critics.
Their gimmick is that the crust is made from whole wheat and smeared on a stone where it is toasted to a very thin and crispy pizza crust. I have to admit that the crust was great and the best part of the meal. I had the Oven Roasted Vegetable Flat and Mark had the Porcini and Portobello flat which sounded great when we ordered, but honestly they were both pretty tasteless. They needed to add some olive oil and spices to their topping mix to give it some more flavor. I had asiago cheese on my flat, but it was very mild and not at all what I would consider fine cheese. They loose points for skimping on the quality of the ingredients but as “pizza joints” go it was a much better alternative than many of the places around Orlando.
Just a side note, my friend Heather ate there on Saturday and really liked their Flatwich, she said it was one of the best sandwiches she's ever had. So I would say it is at least worth a visit.
The website has most of the menu and the prices of the flats…….
