When Mark and I went Streakin’ on Saturday night at the Orlando Fringe Festival, It wasn’t to find relief from the hot Florida weather. We saw the incredible Off Broadway show “Streakin” at this year's Orlando Fringe Festival. The 1970’s spoof musical that made fun of all the songs you once held dear. So why the cool name-the 2 adorable male (completely naked) streakers that ran on stage about 5 times and gave us long full views. They alone were worth the $10 price of admission.
From “You Sexy Thing” to “I will Survive” this show was an immediate crowd pleaser. 40 somethings will enjoy it immensely because of the fond childhood memories it invokes. From Karen Carpenter to “YMCA”, all of the songs bring back moments of a long forgotten past and songs like “WAR” and Neil Young’s “Ohio” invoke feelings of an uncertain future.
A really fun segment was “Name that Theme” where audience participants had to ring, honk or fart in when they could name the tune. Theme songs from “Laverne and Shirley,” “The Jefferson’s,” and “All in the Family,” really made you remember what it was like in 1975.
There were the requisite roller skates and disco balls and lest we forget the homage to “Carrie”, “Michael Jackson”, “John Travolta” and “Donna Summer”.
Serious theatre critics—check your Palm Pilots at the door. This show is all around tasteless and irreverent and that’s what made it really fun.
Other Fringe Shows we attended:
Orlando Vigilante--great show, very funny about an Orlando wannabe superhero.
Shufflin Straight--skits about a teenager with bipolar disorder
To Silence Me is to Silence--written by a victim of child molestation about her haunting experiences
The Apple--a creation story but with a twist. Explored the inequality of women, gays and immigrants from the stand point of 14 youths personally affected.
