The Waitress
*Spoilers*
Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion and Andy Griffith turn in terrific performances in this witty, quirky, loveable movie. This for me is definitely up there with my other favorite girl power movies like Legally Blond, Walk to Remember and The Wedding Planner. If you like funny tear jerkers, but one that lifts you up and makes you appreciate how lucky you have it, then this is the movie for you. This "not to be missed" movie is the surprise hit of the summer, in for what is turning out to be a pretty dismal cinematic year.
What makes this movie stand out, is how real it is. Jenna is the, pie making, every girl, but she has had a pretty hard time of it. Trapped in an unhappy and threatening marriage, she has neither money nor connections to help her escape. She must play the stepford wife just long enough to avoid being hit so that she can squirrel away enough money to get far away from Earl. When Jenna discovers she is pregnant, (from an unsolicited drunken evening), she meets the doctor (Fillion) who will give her the confidence she needs to take control of her life and the customer (Griffith) whom will enable her to do so.
The ending is pretty predictable, you just kinda know that she will have the baby, fall madly in love with it and that somehow old Joe will help her escape her life.
The plot seems kind of usual, but it is told in a superb, heartfelt way that makes every one in the audience fall in love with Jenna and shed an untold number of tears for her plight.
