Shinedown-Orlando House of Blues

It's time I added a new category called music.  Mark and I see our fair share of rock concerts, and for some reason I have never blogged about them.  I think that's mostly due to the fact that I don't feel I am much of an expert on live rock shows.   I certainly am becoming quite the rock album reviewer as per my Amazon reviews, however live shows are an art form on to themselves.

To say Mark was a little hesitant to see Shinedown is an understatement.  He had visions of bible thumpers raising their arms chanting prayer songs.   However, what actually transpired was entirely different.  I think Mark has a new found respect for this Jacksonville alternative rock band.  Fronted by singer Brent Smith, the show was a resounding success.   Except for some flat spots and hard to reach high notes, Brent wooed the audience into submission with his soap box speeches, semi-growling lyrics and edgy acoustic ballads.   Shinedown did a terrific job of rocking the HOB and reminding the young fans in attendance that they are in- fact an alternative rock band.   And if you had any doubt the long loud chant of F-U-F-U-F-U would certainly convince you.

Opening with "Fly from the Inside" and closing with  "Simple Man" and then "Save Me", the rockers hit their best songs.  Notably absent from the line up were my two favorites "Lost in a Crowd" and "Beyond the Sun".  However Brent pounded out an acoustic "Simple Man" and the audience went wild.    A pleasant surprise, the band debuted three of their new tracks from their upcoming album.  Most notably 'Devour" which was a heart-pounding, growling almost-metal number.   They also shared a song "The Crow" which Mark didn't care for, but I think the recorded version will be really good.

Seeing Shinedown reminded me of why I love rock concerts, even at the House of Blues.  There is nothing like hearing your favorite bands live in concert. They are always more raw and edgy and the bass guitar just pounds into your soul.     I hear Chevelle is touring soon, so no doubt we will be back at the HOB.

    1. Learn to use spell check and grammar check.

    2. What the hell would even give you the impression that Shinedown would attract "bible thumbers"... seriously? That's just stupid.

    3. Shinedown does amazing live performances, I'll agree that Brent shines in most acoustic performances, but occasionally has difficultly with the high notes.
