MACBETH at Orlando Shakes

OST is careful to remind you not to utter the word "Macbeth" while inside the theatre.   That would apparently jinx the entire show.  You see, a curse has haunted this play through out the centuries.   Many have actually died or been injured while performing this classic.  Luckily, to date, none of our favorite Orlando actors have been injured as a result of bringing to life one of the bards most important works.

Traditionally, OST performs a Shakespeare play for their last performance.  (Gone are the days when they performed 4-5 or more of the Bards works in a single season as we are down to a meager 2).  This show saw the return of the much missed, Tim Williams.    Alas, Tim played the supporting character of Thane Ross, but was brilliant nonetheless.    We also very much enjoyed Eric Zivot, the perpetually talented professor from Rollins, playing Macduff.  Another favorite, Paul Bernado played a compelling Banquo.  Leading the cast of characters was newcomer Ian Bedford, (from Law and Order) playing the meglomaniacal Macbeth.  I must say he did an admirable job in what is a very tough role.   I also must say that he looked great in all leather and a black leather kilt.

As always, Orlando Shakes delivered the goods.  Another Jim Helsinger direction, Macbeth had amazing blocking, set design and costumes.      Most notably.... the "theatre in the round" style with added rows of seats replacing the  traditional stage.   The round center stage had a drop floor which was cleverly used to bring up the witches and the goddess Hecate as if they were rising from Hades.    Emblazoned on the stage floor... a giant red-lighted pentagram which made for a compelling Lady Macbeth soliloquy.

Annother great show by Orlando Shakes, and one for even newbies.   However, not one to bring the kids.  The child murder scene caused some audience jitters.

To be correct, the most Shakespeare shows OST has produced in any previous season is 3, which is what was produced this season. Comedy of Errors, As You Like It and Macbeth. Glad you liked the show. We are very proud of it.
