Legally Blond the Musical
Fans of the movie may find this ULTRA campy rendition insulting, but I found it "like totally fun". Despite myself, I loved the play. Perhaps it was the perfect imitation of Reese Witherspoon, the comedic antics, or the pink explosion??? (Actually it may have been the completely adorable Bruiser dog, the best trained one in the cast), But even after sitting through 2 hours of sappy show tunes I really had a great time.
Highlights:
Broadway understudy Becky Gulsvig starred as Elle Woods and she was an exact replica of the movie version. From her singing voice to every movement she made, I was watching Resse. Orlando critic Elizabeth Maupin lambasted Becky for her nasal sounding voice, but I thought it really fit Elle.
UPS-man Kyle was probably the funniest character in the show. Every moment he was on stage you would hear cheesy hunk music and Kyle would strut in a virtual dance like move. It was hilarious.
I LOVED the song "Gay and European" which I don't see listed in the song list. It was one of the songs in the courtroom scene when Niko was outed by Elle because he didn't fall for her "Bend and Snap". This song involved the whole cast with Niko and Carlos leading and they were completely ON.
True to most Broadway shows, the sets were beautiful. The courtroom set spun around and seemed to double as the law offices, effective for quick transitions. The outer perimeter of the stage appeared to be one rectangle of light which changed color with the mood of the scene and with Elle's attire.
The greek chorus. A useful plot device for a musical and a way to keep the sorority girls in the scenes. What better way than a greek chorus in Elle's head.
