Review of Chevelle, Halestorm in Orlando

After 5 studio albums and 5 live shows I am absolutely convinced that Chevelle is on the very TOP of my favorite band list.   They consistently deliver superior hard rock tunes with driving rhythms, unique melodies, metaphoric lyrics and raw emotion that speaks to your soul.   The guys played for over an hour and performed all of their very best songs including some of my favorites, Vitamin R, Clincher, Well Enough Alone, Red, Closure, Comfortable Liar.  They also performed Sleep Apnea and Jars off of their latest release Sci-Fi Crimes.   Pete, as always, was an amazing frontman and truly gave it his all on both vocals and lead guitar.

Chevelle gets better and better every time.

Halestorm:

Halestorm blew into Orlando, but it was only at cat. 2 force. There has been so much buzz around this band that I was sure I would walk out of the show with their CD.  But alas, after hearing them play live,  I am no bigger fan.  Frankly I don't understand all the hype.    Granted, Lizzie Hale has a spectacular voice.  Very much in the style of Pat Benatar.  But this band lacks a fundamental quality necessary to really rocket to the top-great songs.

Lizzie opened the show with acapella vocals, and the band eventually joined in with really a great sound.   There is no debating that this group has many of the ingredients, especailly a talented drummer.   However once the guitars started playing their riffs,  Mark and I both commented that we were hearing just a bunch of chords sort of backing up Lizzie's vocals.  There seemed to be so much focus on simply making sounds behind Lizzie, that they forgot that the song structures, riffs and lead runs need to stand on their own.   They didn't.    All in all this is a talented group for sure.  The crowd went wild when all four members started banging on a bunch  of toms.

After Midnight Project:
We really liked these guys.  Straight out of California these guys had some interesting songs, smart twin lead guitars and a very strong vocalist.    I'll have to continue to watch this band.
